WHY EVEN TRY NATURAL HEALTH CARE ALTERNATIVES?
Each time we did that, we received the most incredible health care service that resulted in a totally different method of diagnosing and healing our health problems.
Specific testing was done, close examinations were done and in each case, the problem was diagnosed very quickly. The prescribed herbal, homeopathic & often dietary remedies prescribed were started immediately and within days, there was no longer any reason to have the surgeries.
Please don't get me wrong. Surgery is a vital part of our health care options and sometimes very necessary. Sometimes, however, there are other, better ways to approach a medical problem and I would recommend that it is worth getting the professional opinion of a licensed naturopathic doctor or clinical herbalist as a way to augment the standard medical care systems.
For example; in the one case, our 10 year old son had a sore neck for a few weeks and so we took him to our family doctor. The doc examined him and said that our son had a stiff neck muscle and we should take him for massage therapy. We saw a massage therapist a few days later and after a few minutes of massaging my sons neck, she announced that whatever the doctor had diagnosed as a stiff muscle was not a muscle at all but a very firm golf ball size lump. She said it was completely un-muscle like and that we needed to see a doctor immediately.
We were on our way to a family vacation at this point and so we took our son to the emergency room of the town hospital. We just wanted it checked before we boarded the first of two ferries that would take us to our holiday destination on Cortez Island, B.C.
The doctor at the hospital told us not to worry but that it should be x-rayed or ultra sound imaged to determine the lump's nature. That was then done and off we went for our short, 4 day, vacation. The lump got bigger in those four days and so as soon as we returned home, we went back to our family doctor to hear the imaging results.
After a brief examination, doctor asked another doctor to come and look at our son's lump, which she had just a week previously diagnosed as a stiff muscle. The two looked very concerned and solemn as they informed us of the possibility that the lump was leukemia or some other childhood cancer! They said they would schedule a biopsy surgery in the next week as it was urgent.
I'm sure I don't need to go over how our hearts felt as we heard this devastating news. Suffice it to say were absolutely sick!
The next day, we had our son at the clinical herbalists office to see if there was anything we could start doing right away to help our son fight off the lump and/or prepare for the coming surgery. Her name is Mary Anne Merideth and her clinic was called Circles. Mary Anne looked at the lump and then asked our son if any other part of him was sore or bothering him. He said his eye was bugging him. His one eye did look quite red actually and I had asked him if he had gotten something in his eye earlier that week or if the red eye he had contracted in Tobago that winter was possibly recurring. Unsure, we had been putting the polysporin eyedrops in both his eyes every day just in case.
So the herbalist felt up and around his eye and down the neck to the lump, which interestingly was on the same side as the red eye. She exclaimed aha and declared that our kid had a eye infection that had lingered and gotten a bit out of control. The lump in our son's neck was a full lymph gland that had been handling the toxins that his immune system was drawing out the infected eye. The lymph node had blocked she thought and then started to swell.
Well! That was certainly a different diagnosis, but it made so much more sense. Mary Anne prescribed eyebright drops for the eye infection and lymphatic drainage promoting herbal compresses for the lump. She also prepared a custom mixture of immune boosting and lymphatic draining herbal tinctures and a medicinal tea, both to be taken internally.
I'll cut to the chase; within 24 hours the lump was half the size and in 3 days it was gone. We returned to the family doctor and was told that there was no way any compress on the outside of the body could have dramatically affected the lump. She said our sons' red eye was no doubt some sort of environmental irritant. I asked how the irritant could only be bothering ONE of his eyes and not the other. She shrugged and said we would still be scheduling the biopsy as planned. We said we would not because there was no lump left to biopsy, but that we would certainly keep an eye on the lump to see if there were any further changes.
No further changes ever did happen; our son is 23 years old now. He did not have anything wrong with him other that an eye infection with a blocked lymph gland.
You can imagine how astounded we were on that little medical odyssey and how grateful that our son was not seriously ill. After that, we have never failed to consult an alternative health care professional. They have extra tools, extra diagnostic tests, and natural remedies and treatments that have no dangerous side effects. With three kids, believe me, we were visiting our herbalist and naturopath quite a bit. Every time was the same, the problem was solved without the invasive or dangerous solutions the family GP has told us we would need.
Bottom line I guess is this. The doctors do not know everything. It will always be worth it to find out what health care professionals from other modalities have to say about any ailment. They know about treatments that are just not part of the standard medical practitioner's training.
